We are excited to highlight Dr. Jan Hoistad again this week – a local Twin Cities-based coach and consultant with a holistic approach to personal and professional transition, growth, and change.
Dr. Jan is a licensed psychologist with a M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, but today she calls Minneapolis home. And, it’s from the Twin Cities where she works with people across every stage of life or career ambition across the globe. We continue to learn more and more about her brand as we dive deeper into an ongoing partnership with her; aiding her in creating a conversation and rhythm of content sharing across her blog and key social media outlets.
How did Back2Basics, LLC get involved with Dr. Jan Hoistad this year?
We were first introduced to Dr. Jan as a referral from another strong businesswoman we know and admire – Whitney Emanuel; owner of Strategic Visionaries Financial Planning in Minneapolis.
Jan, (as she likes to be referred to), was looking for someone to help her with managing and implementing a social media content project. She had a graphic designer in place, an amazingly talented young woman who would soon be transitioning to a medical field of study, and she herself had a plethora of creative ideas, and an astonishing volume of published content to work with, and some big ideas of where she saw her business focus moving and where she wanted to steer it. WE just had to help her sort it out and give her a plan to pull some of those ideas together, plot them out, and create a strategy for distribution. And, like with most small business owners and independent professionals, there was a budget to work with. So, we’ve had to incrementally work these strategies through and empower her with the flexibility to make micro shifts and changes along the journey. And, we think it’s working…
Eight months later, and one team member down from where we first started, Dr. Jan and Back2Basics’ lead brand manager have found their rhythm and continue to churn out welcomed market reach and results through an expanded working relationship that has now taken the form of strategy sessions, website maintenance, website page building and optimization, and a refocus in social media content development and distribution.
2021 is looking up for Dr. Jan Hoistad, and she is on track to break some personal goals this year already. Our team couldn’t be more happy and excited to watch her soar.

But, it’s not just Dr. Jan who has realized some growth and benefit from this mutual partnership –
Tanya found an unexpected source of strength and personal relationship guidance through the writings and teachings she has had the privilege of reading through her work with Jan. Here’s what Tanya had to say about one particular experience over the past year that helped renew her inner energy amidst her own personal challenges and growth in 2020:
I have been working along side Dr. Jan Hoistad for little over 6 months to collectively create a strategy for her informational content creation and business brand story. During that time, I had the benefit of learning, not only more about her, but also learning from her through the hours of pouring through this content that has been pouring out of her.
I was able to read through her lessons and her tidbits of wisdom as well as about the positive results her clients experienced over the past months (and years).
Those pieces and tidbits and success stories inspire me in my own business – every day, but it also inspired me to some self-reflection of my personal relationships with my beloved partner and spouse as well as those relationships with my children, and my extended family. She’s always saying to people – “It’s more about the destination“. I always felt it was more about the journey – but I’ve come to learn that, although the journey is a very important aspect of growth, it’s the destination that’s important and realizing that destination together when there’s another person involved, be it your spouse or partner.
I recently picked up one of Dr. Jan’s bestselling books – “TELL ME WHAT YOU’RE THINKING – 117 Questions to Help Any Couple Grow Closer” and distributed some copies as gifts over the Christmas season to other friends and business clients, but I also kept a copy for myself to explore. My husband and I picked a night this past holiday to sit quietly, undistracted by lights, the television, the children, or our “smart” devices… and just started randomly selecting chapters within the book to explore.
We found, through the focused time we set aside that we were able to discover perspectives, ideas, and little pieces of information we didn’t know about each other. We thought, in our 15 years together, we knew everything there was to know about each other – childhood, family dynamics, work life, aspirations, political positions, personal insecurities, fears – we would be wrong.
Twenty minutes turned into forty minutes. Forty turned into two hours. Before we knew it, we were feeling mentally exhausted – but in a good way – and even closer. It was the first time in almost a year, and through the exhausting battles of current life, that we retired to slumber at the same time. We felt reconnected and even more close than we had previously.
The book is an amazing journey of self-discovery as well as partnership discovery. It helps strip away preconceived notions and helps you rediscover what you love about one another – those things that you connect with and are on the same page about, but more importantly, the differences between you that attracted you to them in the first place… that inquisitive appeal of one another.
Dr. Jan’s book of 117 prompts also gives you a platform to dive deeper in a permissive way. It requires cooperation and openness between partners on their journey of discovery. You have to let your guards down and you have to give permission to your partner to be heard. It’s a great device to help you practice active listening as well as active talking and owning your message.
I’m so grateful the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Jan in way most will not get to experience, but I can completely endorse all the reasons why an individual, a couple, or even a professional partnership or set of individuals would be better off; personally or professionally, by taking a journey of self-discovery and relationship coaching with Dr. Jan Hoistad.
I highly recommend Dr. Jan Hoistad as a valuable and expert resource for couples, business owners and professionals who want more out of life, their business relationships or their career goals and are facing transitional moments in their life or those relationships.
